St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton's Forensic Psychiatry Program and Mental Health and Addiction Program,
and McMaster University present the 11th Annual Risk and Recovery Forensic Conference

Mr. Lee Chapelle

Lee Chapelle is a former inmate who served twenty-one years in the federal correctional system.  He served in various penitentiaries as an Inmate Committee Chairman - an inmate-elected position - lobbying for prisoner and human rights.  This involved working with inmate populations as well as extensive dealings with prison administrators and staff alike.

Following the completion of his sentence in 2010, he founded Canadian Prison Consulting Incorporated, an advocacy and reform-based organization.  Its mandate is twofold:  helping people take ownership of their behaviour while striving to ensure the Canadian justice/correctional system also works to do just that.

Lee has authored a book on Canadian corrections, "Hard Time in Canada: One Man's Journey Inside and Out", believing Canadians deserve to better understand what's really happening inside the walls of our prison system.  He recently addressed the Senate of Canada as an Expert on Mental Health in Prisons and conducts numerous media appearances on subjects ranging from prison violence, overcrowding, mental health and the effects of long term segregation.

Lee is a relentless lobbyist for inmate/human rights.  He understands the intricacies of the system in ways that allow him to advocate efficiently and effectively.  He now dedicates his life to the active pursuit of Canadian crime prevention initiatives and prison reform.  His work includes training to all levels of government, mediation, and the provision of individual and family counseling, specializing in the field of Grief and Trauma.
